Overview

The VIAVI Optimeter is an optical fiber meter intended for novice and entry-level technicians responsible for fiber premises installation and repair. With a single fiber connection and one key press, it validates and certifies a fiber link in less than one minute, reporting power, length, loss and optical return loss (ORL).

Operation

When the meter is switched on and a fiber is connected, it automatically checks the light level(s). The dual-band selective power meter separates and measures two co-existing PON downstream signals (1490/1550 nm and 1490/1577 nm). A single key press then runs a fiber link verification with fault finding and displays a link map with all elements identified. All results are shown on one screen, and the instrument requires minimal settings.

PON/FTTx last-mile testing

Dedicated test modes support last-mile installation and maintenance. A continuity-to-OLT and splitter connectivity check lets a technician verify the physical connection up to the first splitter when no light is present, with guidance on possible root causes such as a fiber break, a disconnected splitter or an inactive OLT. An ONT detection function determines whether an ONT is connected to the drop cable without access to the customer premises.

Point-to-point links

The Optimeter can also be used on point-to-point access, mobile fronthaul (FTTA, DAS and small cells) and backhaul links. Its 1650 nm out-of-band laser and integrated filter allow testing on dark or live fiber without disrupting traffic. The optional OptiTrakPLUS software adds OTDR trace display, a real-time OTDR mode and control of a 2 kHz tone generator.

Reporting and workflow

Results are saved automatically on test completion in a single PDF report organized by job number. Reports can be transferred wirelessly to a smartphone or tablet with the VIAVI Mobile Tech App, enhanced with geolocation data and uploaded to the VIAVI StrataSync Test Process Automation suite for KPI dashboards and reporting. The unit ships with a protective "glove" case, and a launch cable can remain connected permanently; the meter checks the condition of its test port and test lead before measuring.
