Overview

The VIAVI 4100 Series CWDM OTDR modules are plug-in optical time domain reflectometer modules for the T-BERD/MTS-2000, -4000 V2 and -5800 test platforms. They are used by cable operators, dark fiber providers and telecommunication service providers to test through MUX/DEMUX and to perform end-to-end link characterization or troubleshooting of active C-RAN, DAS and mobile fronthaul CWDM networks.

The family is offered in three versions. The CWDM8U module covers 8 wavelengths from 1471 nm to 1611 nm, the CWDM10U module covers 10 wavelengths from 1431 nm to 1611 nm, and the CWDM10L module covers 10 wavelengths from 1271 nm to 1451 nm. Two modules together cover all 18 CWDM wavelengths.

Each module integrates a continuous wave light source with modulation capability at the same wavelengths as the OTDR, which can be used to verify end-to-end continuity. Automatic traffic detection and in-service testing allow new CWDM wavelength routes to be tested and faults to be located without disrupting traffic on active channels.

Software and analysis

On the T-BERD/MTS platform, testing features include automatic multitest configurations, a summary results table with pass/fail analysis and FastReport onboard report generation. The optional Smart Link Mapper (SLM) converts the OTDR trace into icons for splices, connectors and MUX/DEMUX elements. The modules can be combined with the COSA-4055 CWDM optical spectrum analyzer module to measure the wavelengths and power levels of active CWDM channels.
