Overview

The VIAVI Xgig Exerciser Host Test Stand (Xgig5P-PCIe5-X16-EH2) is used with the Xgig PCIe 5.0 Exerciser operating in host emulation mode. It provides a PCIe CEM slot that supplies connectivity and power to an adapter card endpoint Device Under Test (DUT), and is intended for developing, debugging and performance tuning PCIe adapter cards together with their controllers and firmware.

Working with the Xgig5P-PCIe5-X16-PF Analyzer/Exerciser/Jammer chassis, the test stand supports debug and verification of new controller ICs, firmware tuning and validation of application software. It can be used to test Ethernet adapters, RAID controllers, graphics cards and other device functions. Bi-directional PCIe 5.0 protocol data across 16 lanes at 32Gbps is transferred through the test stand between the DUT and the exerciser platform over custom high-performance cabling.

Signal path

High-speed linear redrivers buffer the data signals so that clean signals reach both the analysis platform chassis and the DUT. The Exerciser function transmits a PCIe protocol stream to the test stand, which buffers and forwards it to the DUT; DUT responses are terminated at the test stand and retransmitted to the platform, where the analysis function checks them. Real-time branching in the Exerciser maintains an active PCIe link.

Setup and control

Setup consists of connecting the cables between the test stand and the 5P16 chassis, installing the adapter card DUT, and applying AC power to both units. The Xgig analysis tools running on a Windows PC control the test bench, including setup, execution and analysis of results.
