Overview
The VIAVI Xgig Jammer for PCI Express 5.0 adds error injection (jamming) to the Xgig PCI Express systems. It manipulates live traffic in real time to simulate errors, so engineers can check how well error recovery works and how quickly it responds. A jammer is used for hardware controller state machine validation and for protocol stack validation of system software. It makes it possible to test boundary and stress conditions that do not occur in normal operation and would otherwise be hard to check.
The Jammer is protocol-aware and can edit traffic on any bit in any frame, from the physical layer up to the protocol layers. Random errors can be injected, and conditional jamming keeps the test under tight control so that each relevant operating condition is exercised. Errors can be defined and timed precisely. Preset configuration files can step through all relevant error conditions, and stored test cases support automated regression testing.
Configurations
The Jammer sits inline in the PCIe data path and splits the link into two segments. Upstream traffic, downstream traffic, or both can be jammed at the same time. The function is normally paired with an Analyzer in an Analyzer-Jammer (AJ) configuration. A second Analyzer can be added in the Analyzer-Jammer-Analyzer (AJA) configuration to see input and output data on all lanes, both before and after jamming. VIAVI PCIe interposers connect the Xgig PCIe 5.0 analysis chassis to the devices under test.
Software
The Jammer is a licensable option for Xgig multifunction blades and is available as 16-lane, 8-lane or 4-lane license keys. It can trigger the Xgig Analyzer and receive arming signals from it. Custom test configurations can be created from scratch or edited from existing or library configurations. The Jammer Test Suite API allows complex test sequences to be specified. Xgig analysis tools run on a local or remote Windows PC.
