Overview
The VIAVI SmartClass Fiber OLP-85 combines pass/fail fiber-end-face inspection with optical power measurement (OPM) in one handheld instrument. It is a battery-operated, field-portable broadband power meter with a measurement wavelength range of 800 to 1700 nm, adjustable in 1 nm steps, and a 100 dB dynamic range. Its accuracy is maintained across the whole range, so the same instrument can be used where very low or very high optical power levels have to be measured.
The OLP-85 measures absolute and relative optical power and, together with a VIAVI OLS-3x or OLS-8x light source, optical insertion loss. Auto-lambda and multi-lambda functions are available when the meter is used with VIAVI light sources, and tone detection supports CW, 270 Hz, 1 kHz and 2 kHz signals. Individual thresholds for power and loss allow pass/fail analysis of each result.
Inspection and connectivity
Connector inspection follows the Inspect Before You Connect (IBYC) principle. The OLP-85 inspects with the optional external P5000i digital analysis microscope, while the OLP-85P adds an integrated patch cord microscope (PCM). Fiber inspection and test results are stored on board with a time stamp, and data transfer and remote control are available through USB or Ethernet interfaces.
Hardware
The instrument has a 3.5-inch color touch screen with integrated stylus and a universal push-pull (UPP) 2.5 mm adapter system, with an optional 1.25 mm adapter, compatible with all optical connector types. The housing is compact, rugged and weather-proof. It runs on eight AA alkaline batteries or a Li-ion battery pack, or from a universal power adapter.
