Overview
The Luna ODiSI 7100 Series is a high-definition distributed fiber optic sensing system for real-time strain and temperature measurement in advanced materials, components and structures. A single continuous optical fiber serves as the sensor and provides thousands of strain or temperature measurements per meter. The system can map the full strain contour of a structure under test or the continuous temperature profile of a process in real time.
The sensor is flexible and low profile and needs no electrical source. It can be bonded to sharply curved surfaces, embedded within structures or mounted directly on electrical surfaces.
Sensor types
High-definition (HD) sensors are distributed sensors based on the Rayleigh backscatter that occurs naturally in optical fiber. HD strain sensors use polyimide-coated fiber, are calibrated with NIST-traceable fixtures and are supplied with calibrated scaling coefficients and a reference key for plug-and-play operation. HD-SC strain-compensated temperature sensors use an advanced interrogation mode to improve temperature accuracy when the sensor is under strain, as in embedded and surface-mount installations. Continuous fiber grating (CFG) sensors have fiber Bragg gratings inscribed continuously along the fiber, which gives them greater tolerance to vibration and better dynamic performance.
System configuration
The system has up to 8 channels. With Standard Remote Modules, each channel supports an HD sensor up to 20 m long or a CFG sensor up to 15 m long. Optional Extended Range Remote Modules extend this to sensors up to 100 m long and add support for HD-SC sensors. Gage pitch and gage locations are set in software, with gage pitches of 0.65 mm, 1.3 mm, 2.6 mm or 5.2 mm.
Software
The ODiSI application software runs on a Linux controller. It configures the system, identifies sensors automatically, and acquires, plots, logs, replays and exports measurement data. Data can be streamed in real time over Ethernet. The ODiSI Remote software for Windows and Linux provides basic control and live or replayed data viewing from a networked computer. The optional 3DViz software maps real-time or saved data onto 3D CAD models or 2D images.
