Overview

The MOSX-C1116XCCB0-M100-MSU is the 16-port, SC/APC bulkhead version of the VIAVI mOSX-C1 cross connect optical switch, a non-blocking, bidirectional matrix switch module for the MAP Series platform. It occupies a dual-width slot and is designed as a test path manager: multiple test paths can be connected across the switch fabric so that test processes run in parallel.

Switch fabric

The module uses a common connection (any-port to any-port) fabric. Reflective optics fold the switch engine so that each fiber can connect to every other fiber, and the same hardware can be configured in software as symmetric or asymmetric topologies; a 16-port switch can be set up as a dual 4x4, 8x8, 7x9, 6x10 or 1x15. Ports can be allocated as inputs or outputs as needed. Connections may be pre-configured without light present, remain in a blocking state until activated, and can be made and broken without affecting other connections. Individual connections between ports can be disabled or re-enabled.

Measurement principle

The switching engine is based on compact piezoelectric actuators that align the signal path using expanded beam optics. A capacitive sensor matrix measures the position of the collimating lens to nanometer accuracy for long-term stability and repeatability, and connections are maintained even when no light is present. The simple optical path keeps polarization dependent loss low and minimizes return loss.

Control and platform

The switch is controlled through a SCPI remote interface or the MAP Series graphical user interface, where ports can be given logical names and a specific MxN topology can optionally be enforced as a software option. The mOSX belongs to the LightDirect switching module family and is compatible with all current MAP-300 and MAP-200 chassis. It can be paired with MAP-Series mOSW modules to build larger switching systems.
