Overview

The VIAVI MAP High Resolution Optical Spectrum Analyzer (mHROSA-A2) is a single-slot cassette for the Multiple Application Platform (MAP) that combines a multi-wavelength meter and a high resolution optical spectrum analyzer. It is intended for lab and manufacturing test systems, with a focus on coherent transport testing and automated production test.

Measurement principle

Unlike grating-based OSAs, the module uses coherent heterodyne detection: the incoming signal is mixed with a tunable local oscillator laser. Resolution bandwidth is set by the linewidth of the local laser and the electrical bandwidth of the heterodyne receiver rather than by a mechanical slit. A polarization-diverse optical mixer makes the measured amplitude independent of input polarization, and the tunable laser is referenced to a frequency-stabilized artifact to maintain wavelength accuracy across the scan. The module has no moving parts.

With a 300 MHz resolution bandwidth and ±3 pm wavelength uncertainty in the extended C-band, the module resolves densely spaced optical signals as close as 2 GHz and can also serve as a multi-wavelength meter. It reports OSNR, peak power and wavelength, and supports coherent modulation formats and flexible-grid WDM signal analysis, including signals such as 400GZR and 800GZR.

Analysis and control

OSNR and channel detection settings, such as minimum channel spacing, minimum channel elevation and OSNR method, can be adjusted. A splitter compensation value can be set to display the actual fiber power when measuring after a tap coupler. The GUI can be reached remotely over a web connection or through an HDMI monitor, and a version with an integrated touchscreen is also available. For automation, the module accepts SCPI-compliant commands over Ethernet, and the MAP can be ordered with an optional GPIB port.

Platform compatibility

The mHROSA-A2 belongs to the MAP LightDirect family and can be combined with other MAP modules such as power meters, attenuators, switches, sources and signal conditioning modules. According to the datasheet it works only with MAP-300 mainframes. The product web page refers to the earlier MHROSA-A1 and mWAVE-A1 modules and the MAP-200 automation interface; the companion mWAVE-A1 wavemeter is used in MAP-230B and MAP-280 mainframes.
