Overview

The VIAVI MAP Optical Fiber Amplifier (mOFA-C1) is a fiber amplifier module for the Multiple Application Platform (MAP) Series, designed for test and measurement applications in the O-band. It is based on bismuth-doped optical fiber and amplifies LAN WDM and CWDM formats with a single amplifier. Its low noise figure and linear performance suit 400/800GE+ transmission testing.

Measurement principle

The mOFA-C1 uses optically pumped gain fiber to generate gain. Instead of the erbium-doped fiber (EDF) used in C- and L-band amplifiers, VIAVI uses a bismuth-doped fiber (BDF) from OFS, with supporting optical components designed for high output power, low noise figure and low polarization response across the key region of the O-band. Compared with semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA), the module offers better gain, linearity, noise and polarization dependence. Compared with alternative gain fibers such as praseodymium, bismuth provides the gain flatness needed to amplify LR4 and LR8 formats in a single amplifier.

These amplifiers are intended for test automation setups where system path loss means the test signal needs a power boost before it reaches the DUT or a sensitive analyzer, while keeping OSNR impairments to a minimum across all wavelengths. Automatic gain and power control options simplify power management.

Control and platform

The module can be controlled from the front panel or over the remote interface. Through the MAP-300 chassis, its simplified and detailed control UIs open in the Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge web browser. The MAP Series complies with LAN Extensions for Instrumentation (LXI) and provides IVI drivers for environments such as LabVIEW, Visual C++, Visual Basic and LabWindows. Commands generally follow SCPI. The mOFA-C1 belongs to the LightDirect module family, a group of single-function MAP Series modules with a simple control interface.
