Overview
The VIAVI OSPREY (Operational Simulated Positioning for Real-time Evaluation of Systems) is a portable GPS position simulator that generates static waypoints and dynamic routes for avionics testing. It simulates the GPS L1 signal and connects directly to a GPS receiver, or radiates through single or dual GPS antenna configurations.
Daily almanac data can be uploaded to the OSPREY through an automated process, which simplifies achieving a position lock on the GPS receiver under test.
Operation and connectivity
The unit is fully self-contained, with an internal lithium-ion battery, an on-screen battery indicator and a real-time clock. It can be controlled remotely through the VIAVI OSPREY mobile application for iOS and Android devices over Bluetooth. Firmware updates are installed via USB.
Typical uses include verifying system installations, ADS-B testing, testing XM Weather systems, and training technicians and pilots on new or upgraded avionics installations.
