Overview

The VIAVI 8800SX is an analog and digital radio test set for land mobile radio (LMR) work. Its hybrid portable design is meant for use both on the bench and in the field. It has a 30.5 cm (12 in) color touch-screen display, and an internal swappable battery allows operation away from mains power.

The instrument covers AM and FM analog radio as well as P25, P25 Phase 2, DMR (MOTOTRBO), NXDN, dPMR, ARIB T98, TETRA and Positive Train Control, depending on the installed options. As a complete analog test system, the 8800SX supports direct-connect testing of a radio. It measures power, frequency error, modulation accuracy, receiver sensitivity and audio performance.

Measurement functions

The built-in tools include a 1 GHz RF generator and receiver, a channel analyzer, an oscilloscope, a digital multimeter, audio level, distortion and SINAD meters, an RF power meter and an audio frequency counter. An optional tracking generator adds VSWR, return loss and distance-to-fault plots. These are used to analyze antennas, duplexers and combiners, and to locate faults in cables in vehicles and at remote sites. A version with an internal Bird 5017D wideband power sensor is also available for in-line power measurements.

Automated test and software

Optional auto-test and alignment software packages support radio families from Motorola Solutions, L3Harris, Kenwood, BK Technologies, EF Johnson, Hytera and Tait. The instrument can be controlled remotely over Ethernet. It also works with the VIAVI Instrument Programming Tool (VIP Tool), which uses Microsoft Excel to build custom automated test scripts and reports. The user interface is available in multiple languages.
