Overview
The MPC-202 is a multifunction polarization controller designed for coherent receiver performance tests. It combines fiber squeezer polarization controllers (PolaRite III) with proprietary polarization control algorithms to provide a wide range of polarization control functions.
Available functions include quasi-uniform rate (Tornado) polarization scrambling, random-rate scrambling with a Rayleigh rate distribution, discrete-state scrambling, sine, square and triangle-wave SOP modulation, triggered scrambling, emulation of Agilent 11896A scrambling speed settings, and manual polarization control.
The Tornado scrambling function reaches SOP scrambling rates of up to 60,000 revolutions/s (more than 360 krad/s) with a narrow rate distribution clustered around the highest rate, which suits SOP tracking speed testing of coherent receivers. The square-wave SOP modulation function, with a slew rate of 360 krad/s, is intended for SOP recovery time tests.
Beyond coherent receiver testing, the instrument is used for recirculating loop experiments, real-fiber SOP variation emulation, PDL and DOP measurement, and system polarization dependence experiments. It is controlled via USB, Ethernet, RS-232 or GPIB and has an OLED front-panel display.
