Overview

The NPB is the NoTail version of the Polarization Beam Combiner/Splitter (PB) from the former General Photonics line. It is part of a group of fiber-coupled passive components that is now discontinued. The device can work as a polarization beam combiner, which combines light from two PM input fibers into a single output fiber. It can also work as a polarization beam splitter, which splits light from one input fiber into two output fibers with orthogonal polarization states.

Typical uses include polarization division multiplexing and demultiplexing, which increase the transmission capacity of optical systems. In optical amplifiers, the device can act as a pump combiner. It combines the output of two pump lasers into one fiber, which raises the amplifier's saturation power and reduces its polarization sensitivity. The device is built in a rugged stainless steel package.

NoTail package

NoTail components have no external fiber pigtails, which makes them easy to use in the laboratory and easy to store. NoTail 3- and 4-port components have mounting magnets, so they can be placed on an optical table. The NoTail version's insertion loss is less than 0.1 dB higher than the pigtailed PB version, excluding connectors.
