Overview

The Luna os5100 is a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) based displacement gage that measures the displacement between two gage points on a specimen surface, with a measurement range of up to 50 mm. Its mounting design allows attachment to various substrates, so it can be used on metal, concrete and other surfaces.

The gage contains two FBG displacement sensors housed in a hard-coat anodized aluminum enclosure. The enclosure shields the sensors from the elements and allows installation in harsh and outdoor environments.

The os5100 can be used on its own or in series as part of an FBG sensor array that may also include strain and temperature gages, accelerometers and other displacement gages. Cables can be joined directly inside the enclosure, which removes the need for separate junction boxes, and cabling for such arrays is less expensive and less cumbersome than for comparable electronic gage networks. Like other FBG based sensors, the gage is immune to EMI, which vibrating wire gages are not.

Each gage ships with a Sensor Information Sheet that lists the gage factor and calibration coefficients needed to convert wavelength information into engineering units. Luna's ENLIGHT Sensing Software provides a utility to calculate these values and to record, display and transmit data for large sensor networks.
