Overview
The Luna os3610 is a strain sensor based on fiber Bragg grating (FBG) technology and is intended exclusively for surface mounting. It is available in two gage lengths, 25 cm and 100 cm, and measures average strain over the length of the gage. Each end of the sensor is attached to the structure through rigid brackets that are welded, bolted, epoxied or grouted to the surface of concrete, rock, steel, composite or other structures.
Two FBGs are housed inside the sealed stainless steel body. One FBG measures strain and the other provides integrated temperature compensation. No epoxies hold the fiber to the carrier, so long-term stability is ensured by design. Armored cables and optional connector protection fittings allow use in harsh environments, and the package is IP67 rated against dust and water ingress.
In side-by-side comparisons with vibrating wire and foil strain gages, the manufacturer reports that the os3610 is equally sensitive and accurate while offering corrosion insensitivity and 100 times more fatigue life. The sensor is qualified to the same standards applied to comparable electronic gages.
The os3610 can be used alone or in series as part of an FBG sensor array; its double-ended design supports multiplexing many sensors on one fiber. It is included in the sensor templates of Luna ENLIGHT software for optical-to-mechanical conversion and is typically used with HYPERION interrogators.
