Overview
The FireFly-IIA is a small GPS Disciplined Oscillator (GPSDO) with a built-in 3-port distribution amplifier and a 50-channel GPS receiver with -160 dBm tracking capability. It is backwards form, fit and function compatible with the FireFly-II GPSDO and adds performance and functionality in the same footprint.
Measuring 1.5 x 3.0 inches, the FireFly-IIA provides Stratum-1 long-term performance of better than 5 parts per trillion (5E-012) averaged over 24 hours. The oscillator is a double-oven SC-cut crystal design.
Outputs and interfaces
The unit provides an OCXO-sourced 1 PPS LVDS output phase synchronized to UTC, a high-accuracy LVDS 10 MHz output and three independent, isolated 10 MHz sine-wave outputs at +13 dBm from the built-in distribution amplifier. Monitoring and control are performed over an RS-232 port using standard SCPI commands, and the unit can generate NMEA-0183 output sentences for integration into existing infrastructure.
Airborne and mission-critical use
For airborne applications, the FireFly-IIA supplies avionics systems with a 3D velocity vector, attitude/tilt information, speed, heading, height (MSL and GPS height), position, time, date, frequency, time-stamping and health information. A ruggedized, extended temperature range and low-g oscillator option is available for military applications, and a direct redundancy feature allows multiple units to be daisy-chained for increased reliability.
