Overview
The VIAVI Xgig PCIe 5.0 Flying-Lead Probe (Xgig5P-PCIe5-X4-FL) provides a data signal tap to the link between host and endpoint devices when a physical connector port is not available. Each probe uses solder-down probe tips to attach to the device under test (DUT) and taps bidirectional data on each of 1 to 4 lanes. With up to four Flying-Lead Probes, the analyzer supports link widths up to x16.
The probe consists of low-loss cables in matched differential pairs connecting to replaceable probe tips. The narrow, flexible tips can be manipulated in tight spaces and staggered without creating interference, and because they are replaceable the probe cables can be reused. The tips are soldered onto the traces near the host or endpoint device, and data from both the upstream and downstream paths is captured at 32 GT/s for analysis.
An optional Clock Probe is available to optimize signal capture; test setups using spread spectrum clocking (SSC) may benefit from it to better lock into the incoming signal.
Applications
The probe supports the analyzer functions of the VIAVI Xgig PCIe5 system chassis. It is intended for capturing signals between controller ICs on the same PCB where no connector provides an access point, as found on single-board computers and other embedded and industrial designs. Together with the analyzer, it is used to debug and verify new hardware ICs, system hardware implementations and firmware, to validate system BIOS and software, and to support manufacturing test.
