Overview

The VIAVI SmartClass OBS-500 is a portable, battery-operated optical broadband light source. It is a member of the VIAVI OBS-500/550 family and is part of the VIAVI fiber characterization and dispersion testing solution.

A single unit provides the test source for three applications: chromatic dispersion (CD), polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and attenuation profile (AP). Used together with the VIAVI Optical Dispersion Measurement (ODM) modules (8100 Series), it allows CD, PMD and AP measurements on fiber networks, including tests through in-line amplifiers/EDFAs.

The instrument uses the SmartClass design for harsh environmental conditions, with a shock-proof, splash-proofed chassis, an interchangeable optical adapter system and LED indication of the operating mode. The application (PMD, CD or AP) is selected on the unit. It runs on four AA cells or from an AC adapter.

The source covers the S, C and L bands. Network operators, fiber installers and dark fiber providers use it to qualify high-speed metro, core and data center interconnect links.
