Overview

The VIAVI ONMSi (Optical Network Management System) is a Remote Fiber Test System (RFTS) for core, metro, access and FTTH networks. It supports the management of fiber optic networks through remote fiber testing and fiber plant documentation, detecting and locating fiber degradation and alerting operators and managers with the details of each fault. Measurement schedules allow network operators to assess long-term fiber performance as a basis for asset management. ONMSi is also part of the VIAVI NITRO Fiber Sensing solution.

How an RFTS works

An RFTS is a centralized system that combines fiber optic test heads placed at key network locations. The test heads sweep the fiber with an OTDR test signal to identify and locate fiber faults and degradations. The system can switch across the fiber plant and can also test on demand, for example for construction verification or post-repair verification after a fiber break.

Issues detected

ONMSi tracks fiber degradation, such as crushed or bent fibers causing signal impairment before an outage occurs. Dirty, damaged or disconnected connectors can be seen using the RFTS OTDR. On-demand tests can also switch the OTDR to a specific DWDM wavelength to determine whether a problem lies in the fiber or in an active element such as an OLT or ONT/ONU.

System architecture

The system supports both point-to-point (metro, core, access) and point-to-multipoint (PON) networks up to the ONT. It scales from one to hundreds of test probes, using VIAVI fiber test heads such as the FTH-5000, FTH-7000 and FTH-9000 together with optical switches. ONMSi is a web-based application with multiple APIs and a domain architecture for integration into the operator's organization. The product is also part of the VIAVI Remote PHY turn-up and maintenance solution.

The specifications below cover the fiber test heads and high port density optical switches documented for use with ONMSi.
