Overview
The VIAVI mVOA-C1 is a variable optical attenuator module for the Multiple Application Platform (MAP series). It uses a stepper motor and a filter to provide programmable attenuation for laboratory and manufacturing test. VIAVI describes the mVOA-C1 as the fifth generation of its attenuator line. Typical uses include amplifier testing, 100/400GE client optic testing and stress testing of coherent long-haul interfaces.
Measurement principle
The light passes through an expanded beam, and a linearly variable neutral density filter sets the attenuation. Motor control algorithms and a kinematic drive change the attenuation quickly with a short settling time. The module has two operating modes. In attenuation mode it changes the insertion loss without reference to the input power. In power mode it sets the absolute output power, which requires the internal power meter option. With input power tracking enabled, the module adjusts itself to keep the output power constant. Power and attenuation offsets can be set to compensate for losses in the test system.
Configurations
There are three configurations:
- a standard attenuator
- an attenuator with an output tap (5% for single-mode) for monitoring on an external power meter
- an attenuator with built-in output power monitoring, which supports both attenuation mode and power mode
All three come in single-mode or multimode fiber and with several connector types. Each is available as a single, dual or quad unit, and every version fits in a single chassis slot. A single 8-slot MAP chassis can hold up to 48 independently controlled attenuators.
Platform
The mVOA belongs to the LightDirect module family. It is hot-pluggable and works with all current MAP-300 and MAP-200 chassis. MAP chassis are available in 2-, 3- and 8-slot versions. They are LXI compliant and provide SCPI-based automation drivers and a web-enabled multiuser interface. The graphical user interface has a summary view for working at system level and a detailed view for control of individual modules.
