Overview

The POS-203 Polarization Stabilizer keeps the output state of polarization (SOP) stable even when the feedback signal fluctuates. An algorithm changes the SOP dynamically to drive the supplied feedback signal to either its maximum or its minimum.

The instrument combines a fiber squeezer polarization controller with proprietary control algorithms. It can compensate for an input polarization discontinuity in as little as 5 ms. It can also track a continuous input SOP rotation of up to 32π/s without resets.

The POS-203 accepts either an optical or an electrical feedback signal. The user can adjust the step size, feedback delay, activation threshold and search mode (maximum or minimum) to tune the control cycle for a given application. These parameters are set up on the front panel.

Optical configuration

The POS-203 has three optical ports on the front panel: input, output and external optical feedback. A rear-panel BNC connector accepts an external electrical feedback signal. For a minimum search, a polarization beam splitter can monitor the output polarization of the user's device. For a maximum search, a polarizer followed by a PM coupler can do the same job. In both cases the monitor signal goes back to the stabilizer's feedback port. The POS-203 can hold any target polarization state, provided the user can generate a feedback signal whose maximum or minimum corresponds to that state.
