Overview
The PLC-004 is the female-connector version of the fully connectorized PolaRITE manual polarization controller in the PLC series. Like the other members of the series, it uses fiber squeezing: pressure applied to a single-mode fiber changes its birefringence and therefore the polarization of the output light. The user sets the amount of pressure with a thumb screw and the pressure axis by rotating the center section of the controller.
Because the unit is fully connectorized, it removes the need to handle fiber pigtails, and users can choose their own bulkhead connectors. The unit is supplied with FC type connectors and can interface with ST and SC type connectors through industry-standard FC/ST or FC/SC adapters.
The device is suited to interconnecting polarization maintaining (PM) fibers using standard connectors without aligning the birefringent axes of the PM fibers. Optional scales allow earlier settings to be replicated, which is useful in laboratories where polarization adjustments must be repeated.
