Overview

Speckle patterns from a multimode fiber can cause problems in applications that require a uniform, stable light distribution at the fiber output. The Luna MMS-003 is a miniature multimode scrambler designed to randomize multimode speckle patterns over time at a scrambling frequency of 725 kHz.

When viewed by cameras or detectors with averaging times greater than 80 ms, the light distribution at the output appears uniform and stationary. The all-fiber optical path keeps the scrambler's insertion loss low.

The MMS-003 is supplied as an OEM module on a reduced-size driver board without an enclosure, with 1 m pigtails of 50/125 µm step index multimode fiber terminated in FC/PC or FC/APC connectors. It runs from a 24 VDC supply and begins scrambling as soon as power is applied; a TTL enable/disable input allows scrambling to be switched without disconnecting the supply.

Typical uses include DNA sequencing, multimode fiber sensing, optical imaging, and testing and measurement of multimode fiber devices.
