os3100 Optical Strain Gage – FBG-Based Weldable or Epoxy-Mounted Strain Sensor
Fiber Bragg grating optical strain gage with a stainless steel carrier for spot-weld or epoxy mounting on structural surfaces.
- Strain sensitivity
- ~ 1.4 pm/με
- Strain limits
- ± 2,500 με
Overview
The Luna os3100 is an optical strain gage based on fiber Bragg grating (FBG) technology. It is designed to make fiber handling easy and to make sensor installation fast and repeatable. A stainless steel carrier holds the FBG in tension without epoxy and protects the fiber during installation.
Two mounting options are available: the gage can be welded or bonded with epoxy to the surface of a structure. Welded gages install in a few minutes and can be used immediately after attachment. Epoxy-mounted gages typically cure in less than 24 hours at room temperature, similar to electronic foil strain gages.
For temperature compensation, the os3100 can be connected in series with an os4100 FBG Temperature Compensation Gage or an os4350 FBG Temperature Sensor. Its double-ended design allows many sensors to be multiplexed on a single fiber.
In side-by-side comparisons with foil strain gages, Luna reports that the os3100 is equally sensitive and accurate, with a greater strain range and 100 times more fatigue life. The gage is qualified for use in harsh environments, and it is included in the ENLIGHT software sensor templates for optical-to-mechanical conversion.
